The Director of Labor Relations is the central member of the labor relations team – the chief negotiator. They will lead and participate in the negotiation and interpretation of each of the collective bargaining agreements throughout the United States and Canada. The Director will lead the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, and procedures to support AWC labor initiatives and align with the organizational priorities. Achieving corporate and localized labor objectives, proactively determining issues, and drafting contract proposals/language will be critical to the success of the Director.

The Director ensures a fair and consistent labor relations approach in leading a positive and collaborative AWC culture. Understanding AWC’s business, and tracking industry trends in collective bargaining, will help the Director support leaders throughout AWC – specifically through the implementation of new or changing labor relations strategies and activities.

The Director must collaboratively provide leadership and direction, to AWC leaders and build their knowledge of labor relations, including strategy, philosophy, and approach.

  • Provide day-to-day direction and expertise on all labor related issues.
  • Provide preventive, proactive advice on a broad range of topics including, but not limited to discrimination, harassment, workplace investigations, etc.
  • Research and create processes/tools to increase efficiency and effectiveness in managing employee and labor relations issues.
  • Design processes for the identification and effective transmission of labor relations strategy and supporting best practices for system wide standardization
  • Develop collaborative and productive working relationships with a variety of stakeholders across the organization to develop and promote a consistent approach to the development, implementation, and maintenance of labor strategies.
  • Monitor union activity at both national and local levels, prepare risk assessment, and communicates to local and senior management
  • Maintain expert knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws/regulation to partner with HR Committee in the development of policies and procedures, by function, to ensure honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
  • Work thoroughly with union leadership to understand disputes and resolve issues and grievances when appropriate.
  • Maintain all labor relations records, documents and collective bargaining notes and history.
  • Lead/assist with all strike preparedness events.
  • Interpret and provide direction to AWC leaders on collective bargaining agreements, past practice, cases appealed to arbitration, as well as policies and procedures.
  • Conduct pre-negotiation meetings with AWC leadership; identify “must haves” and overall negotiation strategy.
  • Manage the investigation and resolution of lawsuits in collaboration with internal partners and external legal counsel. Serve as the first point of contact and lead for all litigation.
  • Collaborate with teams on specific projects to address opportunities, major business changes and/or labor and employee relations issues.
  • Develop specific labor relations training, with the assistance of the Director of Training and Development, on contract interpretation, grievance administration, union avoidance, labor campaigns, arbitration, etc.
  • Identify, train and direct critical response team to be utilized during union organizing activity.
  • Monitor each location’s Labor Exchange meetings to stay abreast of concerns and helps to develop a proactive stagey to overcome.
  • Provide revised or new pay and time keeping rules for data base entry.

Education/Work Experience/Requirements:

  • Three to five (3-5) years’ first chair experience negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements.
  • Five (5) years or more experience acting as a liaison between legal counsel and the company when defending legal matters including labor arbitrations and Human Rights.
  • Three to five (3-5) years’ experience in grievance proceedings, dealing with labor and employment law matters, preferably in a private-sector manufacturing/distribution/automotive environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR Management, Business or related field required.
  • Law degree or Master’s degree in Labor Relations/Industrial Relations preferred.
  • Able to travel 50-75% of the time.
