IC-IS-Update2022

LERA’s June 2022 program featured panels and presentations that corresponded to most Interest Sections (IS) and Industry Councils (IC) – a sign of vitality in these parts of our community.  At the meetings, an IS/IC report was presented to the Executive Board and, following that, the IS/IC leaders discussed the report.  Based on both meetings, we have the following updates for LERA members, with recommendations to be implemented in the coming year:

Rebranding

  • We recommend rebranding the “Work and Employment Relations” Interest Section as “Work, Human Resources, and Organizations” to more fully signal the interests of those involved.
  • We recommend rebranding the “Collective Bargaining Network” Interest Section as the “Collective Bargaining” Interest Section to be consistent with the titles of the other ISs.

Restructuring and Sunsetting

  • We recommend restructuring the “Airlines” Industry Council into “Transportation Services” (including airline, rail, shipping, and trucking services).
  • We recommend sunsetting the “utilities” Industry Council due to low member selection of this IC and a lack of co-chairs.

New Interest Section

  • We are delighted to report on the successful launch of the new "Teaching" Interest Section, which held its first session on the June program.

Potential New Interest Sections

  • We recommend exploring with the co-authors of the current LERA volume and others a potential new Interest Section lifting up issues of diversity, inclusion, equity and other aspects of identity in the workplace, with a title, co-chairs, and founding members invited.

Potential New Industry Councils

  • We recommend exploring a potential new Industry Council on Sports and Entertainment, with a title, co-chairs, and founding members invited.
  • We recommend exploring a potential new Industry Council on Hospitality Services, with a title, co-chairs, and founding members invited.

Other topics were discussed -- these are just highlights.  Comments on this report and Individuals interested in the new organizing topics should contact the Emily Smith or Bernadette Tiemann in the LERA office or Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld at Brandeis University.
