It is with great sadness that the members and leadership of the Labor and Employment Relations Association mourn the untimely passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. Rich was a fearless and forceful fighter for all working people, not just union members. He had an exceptional intellect, and was extremely astute in comprehending and articulating the challenging and rapidly changing political, economic and technological world we live in. From his early years as president of the United Mine Workers to his presidency of the AFL-CIO, in his dealings with union members and union leaders at home and overseas, as well as his dealings with political leaders in state houses, Congress, and the White House, Rich Trumka was a formidable advocate, a stirring orator and a tireless champion of the less powerful. We in the LERA community extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues and to the staff of the AFL-CIO. Especially at this difficult, yet promising historic moment, Rich Trumka and his inspired and inspiring leadership in the fight to lift American workers will be sorely missed.
