ILWU Local 19 Dispatch Hall Tour - ticketed eventGroup facilitated by Donovan Russell, ILWU #63 LERA is offering an educational tour of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 19 Dispatch Hall. Specific timing is still being worked out, but this tour is planned for the afternoon and will include learning some of the rich history of the Longshoreman! In the 1930s, Seattle’s longshoremen played a key role in the city’s labor activism. Facing poor working conditions and low wages, they began organizing for better pay and safety. The 1934 West Coast longshoremen's strike, with Seattle workers at the forefront, became a pivotal moment in labor history. Their fight for union recognition and against exploitation helped establish the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), solidifying Seattle as a major center for labor rights. **Pants, close-toed shoes, and photo ID are required. |
