Speaker Bios

Rose Batt

Rosemary Batt is the Alice Hanson Cook Professor of Women and Work at the ILR School, Cornell University. She is a Professor in Human Resource Studies and International and Comparative Labor. She received her BA from Cornell University and her Ph.D. from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on comparative international studies of management and employment relations, with particular attention to the impact of financialization on management and employment and the globalization and restructuring of service industries and its impact on low wage workers. She previously coordinated the Global Call Center Project/. She has written extensively on human resource practices and their effect on firm performance, the quality of jobs, and wage and employment outcomes.

Her work has appeared in such journals as the Academy of Management Journal, British Journal of Industrial Relations, the European Journal of Industrial Relations, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, International Journal of Human Resource Management, and Personnel Psychology. She is co-author of Private Equity at Work (2014) with Eileen Appelbaum; co-editor of the Oxford Handbook on Work and Organization and co-author of The New American Workplace: Transforming Work Systems in the United States, Cornell University Press.

 Helen Liu

Xiangmin (Helen) Liu, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Management in the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University. Dr. Liu received her Ph.D. in Human Resource Studies from the ILR School at Cornell University in 2009.

Dr. Liu’s primary research interests include three areas: (1) the strategic alignment between human resource systems and organizational objectives, (2) the impact of market forces and social institutions on work practices, and (3) the influences of managerial practices and interpersonal processes on employee outcomes. Her research has been published in Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review, as well as in other academic journals and edited volumes.

Prior to joining the SMLR at Rutgers, Dr. Liu was an Associate Professor of Human Resource Management at the School of Labor and Employment Relations, Pennsylvania State University.
 John Budd John W. Budd is a Professor of Work and Organizations in the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where he holds the Industrial Relations Land Grant Chair. He is a graduate of Colgate University and earned a Ph.D. degree in economics from Princeton University. Professor Budd is the author of Employment with a Human Face: Balancing Efficiency, Equity, and Voice (Cornell University Press), Labor Relations: Striking a Balance (McGraw-Hill), Invisible Hands, Invisible Objectives: Bringing Workplace Law and Public Policy into Focus (with Stephen Befort, Stanford University Press), The Thought of Work (Cornell University Press), and numerous journal articles. Professor Budd is a Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) Fellow, and has been chair of the Department of Work and Organizations, Director of the Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies, and Director of Graduate Studies for the University of Minnesota's graduate programs in Human Resources and Industrial Relations.  Dionne Pohler Dionne Pohler is an associate professor and Associate Director at the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the University of Toronto. She is also cross-appointed to the Rotman School of Management and a research fellow with the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research covers topics in labour and employment, organizational governance, human resource management, co-operative development and strategy, and public policy implementation
 Alan Benson

Alan Benson is Assistant Professor in the Work & Organizations Group at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, and a member of the Graduate Faculty of Minnesota's Department of Applied Economics and the Minnesota Population Center (MPC). He received my PhD from the Institute for Work and Employment Research at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where his dissertation advisors were David Autor (MIT Economics) and Paul Osterman (MIT Sloan). He received his Bachelor's degree from the Cornell's ILR School.

His research is on work and employment issues, and especially on the economics of human resources. His teaching includes compensation and benefits for Master's of HR students, negotiations for MBA students, and labor economics for PhD students. He is also instructor for a Coursera course on compensation and benefits. He has run professional seminars in negotiations, compensation, and people analytics.

 Mark Gough Mark Gough is assistant professor of labor and employment relations at The Pennsylvania State University.  He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University and an M.S. in Human Resources and Employment Relations from Penn State University. Dr. Gough's research focuses on workplace dispute resolution, employment law, and how legal actors affect access to justice in the workplace.  He has been published in top peer-reviewed and legal journals including Industrial and Labor Relations Review and Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law
